How to Grow Flowers

The following guide explains how to plant seeds and grow flowers in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Flowers might appear spontaneously in your town. You can also buy flower seeds at the Nooklings' shop and Garden Center. You can get a watering can to keep your flowers happy and healthy if they start to wilt.

How to Plant Flowers

If you have a flower seed bag, you can plant it in your town. Stand on some grass or dirt in your town, then open up your inventory. Tap the bag of flower seeds, then choose Plant. The flower will be planted on the ground where you are standing. You don't need to use a shovel to plant flowers.

How to Move Flowers Around

You can pick up a flower that has been planted. Stand on or near a flower, then press Y to pick it up and put it in your inventory. Then you can walk to a different location and tap the flower to plant it there. Or, in your inventory screen, you can drag the flower to the ground next to the person in your inventory to plant the flower where you are standing.

Watering Flowers

If you have a watering can, you can use it to water flowers. Simply stand in front of the flower that you want to water, and use the watering can. A flower that has been watered will sparkle all day long. The sparkles go away at 6AM each day.

How to Get a Watering Can

Buy a watering can from the Nooklings' shop or the Garden Center. You can also get a free watering can from Isabelle when you start the game. You can also get a golden and a silver watering can, which can water multiple flowers at a time. Read the golden and silver tools guide for more information.

Wilting Flowers

Sometimes you might see a brown flower in your town. This is a wilting flower. If you do not water a wilting flower, it will disappear the next day.

Trampling Flowers

If you run through a flower, you might destroy the flower by trampling it. Be sure not to run near flowers! You can walk on flowers safely with no risk of trampling them.

Hybrid Flowers

By planting flowers of the same type next to each other (roses next to roses, pansies next to pansies, etc.) you might find new colors of flowers next to them the next day. These unusually colored flowers are called hybrid flowers.

Hybrid Flowers Guide

You can grow flowers in your Animal Crossing: New Leaf village. There will be flowers in your town automatically, and new flowers may appear at random. In addition, your villagers might plant new flowers, and you can buy flowers in the garden shop. If you build a police station, you might find flower seeds in the lost and found.

Hybrids

By placing certain types of flowers and certain colors next to each other, you might have a chance of growing a hybrid flower, which is a flower of a rare color.

How to Grow Hybrids

To make a hybrid flower grow, you have to put two flowers of the same variety (such as two roses, or two cosmos, etc.) next to each other. There is a small chance that a new flower of that type will appear next to them. A new flower can only appear if there are empty spaces next to the pair of flowers. The new flower might be a unique color that can't be purchased in the garden shop and can't randomly appear in your town.

Increase the Likelihood of New Flowers

The following actions might improve your chance of having new flowers appear:

• The orientation of your flowers might have an effect. In previous Animal Crossing games, having the flowers touch diagonally was better, but in other games, having them in straight rows was better.
• Water flowers even if they don't need it
• Plant large patches of the same type of flower to have multiple flowers next to each other
• Bury fertilizer next to the flowers. Fertilizer is available after you upgrade Timmy and Tommy's shop to the Department Store.

Flower Varieties

There are ten types of flowers that can grow in your town:

Public Works Projects

In New Leaf, you can build public works projects. These include things like lamp posts, fountains, and benches, and also include buildings such as The Roost Café and expansions such as the museum shop. This page explains how to create public works projects and has a list of everything that you can create.

Starting a New Project

To start a new building project, go to the town hall and sit in your mayor's chair. Isabelle will come over and give you some options. Choose to build a public works project. Choose the new project option and Isabelle will show you a list of all of the possible projects that you can build. Pick one of these. It doesn't cost anything to pick something from the list. In most cases, your next step is to choose where to build the new structure.

Choose a Location

For most building projects, you must choose the spot where the structure will be built. Isabelle will come out of the Town Hall with you and ask you to walk to the spot where you want to build the project. Walk to the desired spot and then ask Isabelle if it's a good spot. If not, she will tell you why not. For example, she might say that the spot is too close to houses, or there is not enough space around the spot. Once you choose a good spot, Isabelle will show you what the finished structure will look like in the spot that you chose, and will ask if it's okay with you. If so, say yes. A roped-off area will appear in that spot, with a gyroid. The next step is fundraising.

Fundraising

After you have chosen a spot, talk to the gyroid, Lloid, in the roped-off area. It will tell you how many bells are required before the project can be built. If there is no roped-off area, Lloid will be in the train station. You can give Lloid bells. Your villagers might also make small donations over time. In addition, if other players visit your town, they can donate bells as well. Once all of the funds have been raised, the new structure will appear the next day. The next step is the dedication ceremony.

Dedication Ceremony

For the building project to be truly complete, you have to have a dedication ceremony. (You won't be able to start a new project until you do this!) To do it, go sit in your mayor chair after a project has been completed. Isabelle will ask you to have a dedication ceremony for the completed project. Say yes, and you and Isabelle will stand in front of the new structure (or the train station if Lloid was in there), along with some of your villagers. Isabelle will ask you to say a few words.

Deleting a Public Works Project

If you want to get rid of a public works project, just sit in your mayor chair and ask Isabelle. You can't change the location of an existing public works project, so if you want it to be somewhere else, you have to demolish it first and rebuild it. Please note that some public works projects can't be demolished.

Town Ordinances

A town ordinance is a rule that changes certain things about your town. You can enact a town ordinance by sitting in your mayor chair and asking Isabelle about town ordinances. There are four ordinances: Beautiful Town, Early Bird Town, Nightlife Town, and Luxury Town. This page explains how to set a town ordinance and the effects that each ordinance has.

How to Enact a Town Ordinance

To sign a town ordinance into law, you must first earn 100 mayor points. Then, when you sit in your mayor chair, you can choose to set a town ordinance. Whenever you change the town ordinance, you must pay 20,000 bells.

Trees Overview

There are three types of trees that you can plant in your town and on the island. This page explains what the types of trees are and how to get them.

Tree Types

The three types of trees are normal trees, pine trees, and palm trees.

Normal Trees

To get normal trees, you can use a shovel to plant fruit or money. These will turn into the "normal" type of tree. Also, you can grow plain normal trees buy buying a normal tree sapling from the garden store. If you plant a fruit, the tree will grow three of those fruits. If you shake the tree, the fruits will fall, and in a few days there will be more fruit on the tree.

Bell Trees

If you have a golden shovel and you use it to plant bells, there is a small chance that the tree will grow three bags of money.

Perfect Fruit Trees

On trees that are growing your native fruit, sometimes it will grow a different-looking fruit called a perfect fruit. These fruits are quite valuable and can be planted to create perfect fruit trees. 

Pine Trees

Once the garden store opens in your town, you can buy pine tree saplings there. Pine trees will only grow in the northern half of your town. If you try to plant a pine tree sapling in the southern half, it will wither.

Palm Trees

To grow palm trees, you have to plant bananas or coconuts on the beach. If you plant bananas or coconuts in the grass, they will wither and not turn into trees.

To get bananas and coconuts, visit the island. When you first arrive on the island, you will be in a wooden building. If you go out of this building through the door in the south wall, you will arrive on a small island. There should be some palm trees here where you can get bananas or coconuts. To get other fruits, play minigames (island tours) and take some fruits. If the minigame doesn't require you to collect fruits, you can keep the fruits after the minigame is over.

Shaking Trees

To shake a tree, walk up to the tree trunk and press A. When you shake a tree, something might fall out of the tree. A fruit tree will drop its fruits. Also, a tree might have a bug hiding in it. If it's a spider or bagworm, the bug will come down on a strand of silk, then will climb back up after a moment. If you swing your net at the leaves of the tree (not hitting the trunk) you can catch the bug after it goes back up. You can also try to quickly switch to your net and catch the bug while it is below the leaves.

Trees that have nothing growing on them, when shaken, might drop a coin, a piece of furniture, or a beehive. If a beehive falls, the bees will chase after you. If you have a net, you can try to catch them. Here are some tips for catching bees. You can sell the beehive even if you don't catch the bees.

Tree Stumps

When you cut down a tree, it leaves a tree stump behind. You can dig it up with the shovel. Most tree stumps have a bulls-eye pattern, but sometimes a tree stump will have a rare pattern on it. There are benefits to leaving rare stumps in your town.

How to Get All of the Fruits

There are five fruits that can be native to a town, six fruits that can be found on the island, and one that can be bought from the department store. This page explains how to get all of the fruits.

Town Native Fruits

Whenever a player creates an Animal Crossing: New Leaf town, one of the following five fruits is selected as the "native fruit" of that town. The native fruit is the type of fruit that is on the town's trees when the player first moves in.

• Apples
• Cherries
• Oranges
• Peaches
• Pears

How to Get Non-Native Fruits

If you want to get any of the other four types of fruits that are not native to your town, you can do so in the following ways:

Ask Isabelle for Advice

Before you earn 100 mayor points, you can ask Isabelle for advice. She might ask you to bring her an item. For example, she might mention wanting to look for seashells on the beach with you, so bring her a seashell and she will give you an item. Keep bringing her the items she asks for, and she may give you a new type of fruit.

Make Friends with Villagers

If your friendship with a villager is at a high level, the villager might give you some fruit, and if you are lucky, it will be a type of fruit that you don't have. You might also get fruit in the mail from villagers that you are friends with.

Trade with Other Players

Another way to get fruits is to exchange friend codes with other players and trade fruits with them.

Island Fruits

The following six types of fruits can be found on the island.

• Banana
• Coconut
• Durian
• Lemon
• Lychee
• Mango

How to Get Island Fruits

Before you can get island fruits, you have to unlock access to the island.

Get Fruits from the First Island

When you go to the island, you start in a wooden building where you can buy souvenirs, go on tours, sell things, and check the ATM. Go through the south exit of this building to find a small island. There should be either banana trees or coconut trees on the sand, and trees with one of the other types of island fruits on the grass in the middle.

Take Fruit During Tours

In the wooden building where you first arrive on the island, speak to Leilani, who is standing behind the counter. She will tell you a list of the tours that you can go on today. To learn more about island tours.

Some tours require you to give Tortimer some fruit. If you are on a tour where this is NOT the case (a tour where gathering fruit is NOT the objective), then you can keep any fruit that you take from the trees during the tour. It will be in your inventory when you are done with the tour. The fruit on the trees during a tour is random, so just go on many tours until you have collected the types of fruit that you don't have. Send these back to your town using the box next to Leilani's counter.

How to get Persimmons

Persimmons are sold in the department store.

Tree Stump Guide

When you chop down a tree, the usual pattern on the stump is a bulls-eye. However, sometimes the tree stump will have an unusual pattern on it. If this happens, mushrooms can grow around the tree stump. Some mushrooms are very valuable.

Finding Unusual Stump Patterns

To find unusual patterns on tree stumps, simply chop down trees. The bulls-eye pattern is the most common pattern. Anything other than the bulls-eye pattern is special. Mushrooms can grow around special tree stumps year round.

The following is a list of all of the special patterns that can be found on tree stumps.

Finding Mushrooms

If you find any unusual tree stumps, be sure to check around them each day. A mushroom may appear near the stump. Some mushrooms are very valuable. You can also eat mushrooms. Some of them have different effects on your character.

• Skinny Mushroom - 300 Bells

The Rare Mushroom

You can only find rare mushrooms near your tree stumps if you have a perfect town. Rare mushrooms will be buried underground near the tree stump, rather than sitting on the ground like other types of mushrooms.

Finding Bugs

Two types of bugs can only be found on tree stumps: the Longhorn beetle and the Violin beetle. To catch those bugs, make sure you have a tree stump somewhere in your town.

Meteor Showers

Meteor Showers can occur in your village between 7PM and 4PM at certain times of year. During meteor showers, you may see shooting stars in the sky. If you press UP on the directional pad, you can see the shooting stars and press A to make a wish. The next day, you will get a letter in the mail from the shooting star with a present that contains a special item.

When Meteor Showers Occur

If there is clear weather between 10AM and 11AM, a note might appear on the town's signboard announcing that a meteor shower will occur in the evening. Meteor Showers occur between 7PM and 4PM during the following times of year:

• April 1 through April 10
• June 16 through July 5
• December 10
• December 24 through December 30

How to Wish on a Star

During a meteor shower, press Up on the directional pad to look up at the sky. While looking at the sky, watch for a falling star. When you see one and hear the twinkle sound, press the A button. If you timed it correctly, the star will sparkle and make a noise. The next day, you will get a letter in the mail from Wishy. There will be a present attached with rare furniture.

Balloon Presents

When you walk around your village outside, you might see a present float through the air tied to a balloon. If you get a slingshot and shoot it down, you will get balloon furniture or other items from the gift box.

Get a Slingshot

To get balloon presents, you need a slingshot. Check the Nooklings' store. Sometimes they have a slingshot in stock.

Stand Under the Balloon and Shoot

To shoot the present down, you have to stand under the balloon's shadow and shoot the slingshot. If you do it correctly, you will pop the balloon and make the present fall to the ground. Then you can pick it up. Careful! If you shoot a balloon present down near water, the present might fall into the water and be lost!

When Do Balloon Presents Appear?

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, balloon presents appear when the ones digit of the minute is 4. Here are examples: 10:04, 10:14, 10:24, 10:34, 10:44, 10:54.

Balloon Presents You Can Get

You can get the following things from balloon presents.

Improved Slingshots

• Silver Slingshot - This will randomly float past after you have shot down 16 balloon presents with the regular slingshot. You can get more than one.
• Golden Slingshot - This will randomly float past after you have shot down 16 balloon presents with the silver slingshot. It might be possible to get more than one.

Balloon Furniture and Hat

There is a furniture set of balloon furniture that can only be obtained by shooting down balloon presents. You can also get a balloon hat from a balloon present. The following is a list of all of the balloon furniture.

Villager Birthdays

When a villager has a birthday, the villager will throw a party and expect you, the mayor, to drop in! This page tells you how to pick a good gift for your villager.

Birthday Announcements

Before a villager's birthday, that villager will send you a letter to invite you to his or her birthday party. On the day of a villager's birthday, there will be a message on the bulletin board wishing him or her a happy birthday.

Birthday Party

On a villager's birthday, the villager will throw a birthday party in his or her house. There will be another villager in the house with the birthday boy or girl.

Giving a Birthday Gift

As the mayor, you are expected to go to the villager's birthday party and give him or her a gift! Each villager has style preferences and a favorite color. Be sure to give your villager a gift from the style category that he or she likes, and if possible, make sure it's the villager's preferred color. If you give a gift from the villager's disliked style, he or she will be unhappy!

Grass Wear

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, grass can be worn away if you walk over it frequently. If you take the same path when you walk and run around your town, you will eventually create dirt paths in those areas. This page has more details about grass deterioration and growth.

Grass Wear

Grass will wear away if you walk over it frequently. The rate of grass deterioration is unknown, but it wears away much more slowly than in Animal Crossing: City Folk. In City Folk, grass paths would start to show after a week. It takes much longer in New Leaf.

Grass Growth

Grass gradually grows back. Grass will grow more quickly if there are lots of trees and flowers in the area. If you plant flowers on a dirt patch, where there is no grass, be sure to water those flowers. This will encourage the grass to grow back. Rain and snow also help the grass to grow back.

Patterns on the Ground

If you put patterns on the ground in your town, the grass under those patterns will not wear away if you walk on them. To put a pattern on the ground, simply open up your patterns by tapping the pencil icon at the top of the touch screen, then tap a pattern and choose to drop it on the ground.

Snow People

Between December 11 and February 24, there will be two snowballs in your town each day. You can use them to build one new snowperson in your town each day. Depending on the size of the snowballs, you can build Snowman, Snowmam, Snowboy, and Snowtyke. You can receive special items from them.

Building Snow People

You can find two snowballs in your town each day between December 11 and February 14. Each one will be in a random location in your town.

Rolling and Shaping Snowballs

Roll a snowball on snow to make it bigger, or roll the snowball on dirt or stone to make it smaller. Small snowballs must be kicked around, but when a snowball is larger, it can be slowly pushed by hand.

Broken Snowballs

Be careful! If you push the snowball into water, push it against a wall, or drop it off of a cliff, it will break! If you break a snowball, go into a building and then go back outside. There will be a new snowball in a random location in your town.

Putting the Snowballs Together

A snow person is made of two snowballs. Each snowball has to be big enough that you are no longer kicking it when you move it around. If the snowball is too small, you need to make it bigger before you can use it to build a snow person.

To create a snow person, just push one snowball toward another. If both snowballs are big enough, the snowball that you are pushing will jump up on top of the other one, creating a snow person.

Different Types of Snow People

There are several different types of snow people: Snowman, Snowmam, Snowboy, and Snowtyke. Each type gives you different items.

Snowball Sizes

The type of snow person that you create depends on the size of the snowball on the bottom. Here is a list that describes the snowball sizes and the resulting snow people:

• Biggest snowball (just above your ear level): Snowman (wears a top hat)
• Large snowball (your ear level): Snowboy (has a triangular nose and black eyes)
• Medium snowball (just above your chin level): Snowmam (has eyelashes)
• Small snowball (below your chin level): Snowtyke (has a round nose)

Well-balanced Snow People

To make a good quality snow person, the snowball that you push on top should be just slightly smaller than the base snowball. If the top snowball is bigger or a lot smaller than the base snowball, the resulting snow person might not give you any gifts, or might have different requirements for the gifts.

Snow People Gifts

The four different types of snowpeople can give you gifts. The following sections explain how to get gifts from the different snowpeople.

Snowman

The Snowman is made with a very large snowball as the base. He wears a top hat.

If you don't have a bingo card, talk to a Snowman to receive one. Keep in mind that the bingo card can't be dropped or thrown away. Then talk to a Snowman to get a new number on your bingo card. Each Snowman will give you one number per day. You can build multiple Snowmen in your town to get more bingo numbers per day. You can also get bingo numbers from Snowmen in other towns.

If you get five numbers in a line, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, the Snowman will give you a prize and take away the bingo card. You can get a new one the next day. Here is a list of gifts that the Snowman can give you:

Snowboy

The Snowboy is made with a large snowball as the base. He has black eyes and a triangular nose.

If you build a well-balanced Snowboy (i.e. if the top ball is slightly smaller than the base), the Snowboy will send you a letter in the mail the next day. There will be a piece of Snowman furniture or a Snowman or Snowman hat attached.

Snowmam

The Snowmam is created with a medium snowball as the base. She has eyelashes and her hair in a bun.

The Snowmam will ask you to bring her snowflakes. She will ask for fewer snowflakes if she is well-balanced (i.e. if the top ball is slightly smaller than the base). When you have a Snowmam in your town, there will be snowflakes floating around in your town even if it is not snowing. Catch them with your bug net. Give Snowmam the requested number of snowflakes to receive a piece of ice furniture:

The Snowtyke is created with a small snowball as the base. The Snowtyke has a round nose.

To get gifts from Snowtyke, you have to have all four types of snow people in your town, and Snowtyke needs to be well-balanced (i.e. the top ball needs to be slightly smaller than the base). Depending on how well-balanced the other snow people are, Snowtyke will give you one of the following gifts in a letter the next day:

Melting

Snowpeople melt a little bit each day, even if it snows. A snowperson will disappear four days after it was created.
