Bugs, Fish And Deep Sea Creatures

Fishing Tourney

The Fishing Tourney is an event hosted by Chip in the event plaza. The objective is to catch the biggest fish. For some Fishing Tourneys, Chip asks for a specific type of fish. For others, Chip will accept any type of fish. You can get a trophy, as well as rare furniture from the Fish Set.

Entering the Fishing Tourney

To enter the Fishing Tourney, just talk to Chip in your event plaza. He will tell you which type of fish you need to catch, or if any type of fish is OK. After that, just catch fish, then talk to Chip to give the fish to him.

Need a Fishing Rod?

If you don't have a fishing rod, you can buy one from Chip for 500 bells.

Getting Fish Set Furniture

You can get Fish Set furniture during the Fishing Tourney. Chip will give you an item whenever you break your personal record. In other words, if you give Chip a fish, then give him a larger fish, he will give you an item in exchange for the larger fish. Keep giving him larger and larger fish to get more items.

How Big is the Fish?

When you catch a fish, the game shows you its size. After that, the only way to find the size of a fish in your inventory is to give it to Chip. Therefore, you might want to store your fish in a room, arranged by size, so you can give them to Chip in the order of smallest to largest so you get as many items as possible.

Items that You can Get from Chip

You can get the following items from Chip during a Fishing Tourney.
  • A random item
  • Fish Wall
  • Fish Floor

Size

The points for the bug are adjusted based on the bug's size. If the bug is above average size, the points increase. If the bug is smaller than average, the points decrease. The table below lists the adjustments.
Size DifferencePoints are Multiplied by a Number in this Range
Bigger than Average Size1.11 - 1.30
Close to Average Size0.91 - 1.10
Smaller than Average Size0.70 - 0.90

Colour and Shine

The points for the bug are also adjusted based on the bug's color and luster. The color and shine is randomly determined by Nat. There is no way to determine the color and shine before you give Nat the bug. The point adjustment for color and shine depends on the rarity of the bug, as shown in the table below.

Catching Bees and Curing Bee Stings

When you shake an empty tree, a beehive might fall out. The angry swarm of bees will then fly toward you and, if you don't catch them, they will sting you. This page describes what to do about bees.

Get a Bug Net

The bug net is the only way to catch bees. You can buy one at the Nooklings' store.

Catching Bees

When you shake an empty tree, listen for the sound of a falling beehive. Your character will react with shock. The bees will fly around the nest for a moment, then they will start chasing you.
If you open your inventory, the bees will be "paused" and won't be able to move closer to you until you exit the inventory. Therefore, to increase the chance that you successfully catch the bees, run north from the beehive as soon as it has fallen out of the tree, then go into your inventory and equip the bug net. When you equip the net, you automatically face south, and since you ran northward, you are now facing the direction that the bees will be coming from.
When you are ready, exit your inventory. As soon as you can see the bees on the screen, use your net. If you timed it correctly, you will catch the bees.
Be sure to collect the beehive, too. You can sell it!

Running Away

If you don't think you can catch the bees, try to go into a nearby building. The bees will go away, so you can go back outside and those bees won't be chasing you anymore.

Curing Bee Stings

If you aren't able to avoid the bees, they will sting you if they catch you. If this happens, your eye will be swollen shut. To fix this, you can use medicine that you purchase from the Nooklings' store, or you can simply save and quit the game. When you start again, your bee sting will be gone.

In Other Villages

If you are visiting another player's village, you will not find beehives in trees. You can shake all of the trees in the other person's town without fear of finding bees.

Deep Sea Diving and Swimming with a Wetsuit

This page explains how to get a diving suit and how to use it for swimming, diving, and catching deep sea creatures.

How to Get a Wetsuit

To get a wetsuit, you must go to the island.
At the island, Grams runs a souvenir shop with a random selection of island-exclusive items each day. Check back each day, because sometimes she will sell diving suits!
You can also go out through the south exit of the island house and talk to Lloid next to the door. You can borrow a diving suit from him temporarily.

Go on Tours to Win Medals

Before you can buy a diving suit from Grams, you have to win medals by participating in island tours. To find out more about the island tours, check out the island tours page.

List of Diving Suits

Here is a list of the diving suits that you can buy from Grams's shop.
All diving suits cost 40 medals.
  • Black Diving Suit
  • Blue Diving Suit (Club Tortimer members only)
  • Striped Diving Suit (Club Tortimer members only)
  • Green Diving Suit
  • Orange Diving Suit (rare)
  • Pink Diving Suit (rare)
  • Red Diving Suit (Club Tortimer members only)
  • White Diving Suit (Club Tortimer members only)

How to Use a Diving Suit

Put on the Suit

To use a diving suit, you first have to put it on. To do that, you can drag the suit to yourself in your inventory, or you can tap the diving suit and choose to put it on.

Go to the Beach, or a Cliff over the Ocean

To swim, simply go to the beach, walk to the edge of the water, and press A to go into the water. You can also walk to the edge of a cliff that overlooks the ocean (as opposed to overlooking the sand) and press A to jump into the ocean.

Use the Circle Pad and press A to Swim

To swim around, use the circle pad to turn in the direction that you want to swim. You can move around slowly using just the circle pad, or swim quickly by pressing A repeatedly. If you get a good rhythm with the A button, you can swim pretty quickly.

Press Y to Dive

While swimming, press Y to dive underwater. You will see your shadow underwater. You can use the circle pad and press A to move around underwater. You can only stay underwater for a limited time. When you start to run out of air, you will start to swim more quickly underwater. You will automatically come back up to the surface after a while.

Catch Shadows of Deep Sea Creatures

Deep sea creatures look like shadows underwater. They come in different sizes, and have different movement patterns. If you dive underwater and your shadow touches the sea creature's shadow, you will catch the creature. When this happens, you will see an exclamation point, and you will automatically come to the surface holding the sea creature. It goes into your inventory.
Sea creature shadows will disappear if they go all the way to the beach. Sea creatures can also go out of reach if they go beyond the barrier around the water, so be careful.

Watch out for Jellyfish

Sometimes jellyfish float past in the water. They can be difficult to see until they are very close to you. If you hit a jellyfish, you will stop for a few moments. Move the circle pad around to recover more quickly.
