Shop Unlock Guide

When you first move into your village, there will only be a few shops open. You can upgrade and add some new shops if you know how to unlock them.

Item Shop

You can upgrade the item shop so it sells more items. You do so by spending bells at the item shop and doing a few other things. Only items that can be sold out count toward your total. In other words, stationery, wrapping paper, and melody cards don't count toward the bell total. Fortune cookies are counted as 500 bells.

Upgrade to the Convenience Store

To upgrade to the convenience store, you must have a house rather than a tent. Upgrade from the tent by giving 10,000 bells to Tom Nook. The convenience store upgrade occurs after 12,000 bells have been spent in the shop (all players on the game card can contribute) or you have bought at least 15 items. It must be at least 10 days since you created the town.

Upgrade to the Supermarket

The supermarket upgrade occurs after you have spent 25,000 bells in the shop. It must be at least 10 days since the convenience store opened. It must be at least 10 days since the garden center opened.

Upgrade to the Home Center

The upgrade occurs after you have spent 50,000 bells in the shop. It must be at least 21 days since you built the supermarket.

Upgrade to the Department Store

The upgrade occurs after you have spent 100,000 bells in the shop. It must be at least 30 days since you built the home center. You also have to pass Gracie's fashion check at least four times.

Garden Center

To unlock the garden center, the total number of times you have done any of the following actions must be at least 30: pulled weeds, watered flowers, planted trees or flowers. If you don't have a watering can and haven't earned 100% approval rating (see the starting the game guide for information about increasing your approval rating), talk to Isabelle at her front desk in the town hall and ask for advice. If you do all of the things she asks, she will eventually give you a watering can. You can also get a fishing rod or bug net if you keep asking her for advice.

Nook's Homes

Nook's Homes is open from the beginning. Once you pay off your down payment and get a house instead of a tent, Nook's Homes will start selling exteriors, such as new roofs, mailboxes, and so on.

Happy Home Academy

After you pay off your first home loan using the ABD in the post office, talk to Tom Nook. Then exit Nook's Homes and go back in. Tom Nook will introduce Lyle, who will give you advice about increasing your HHA score.

Happy Home Showcase

If you're still living in a tent, pay off your down payment by giving 10,000 bells to Tom Nook. Then use the ABD in the post office to pay off your first house loan. Be sure to talk to Tom Nook after that. The Happy Home Showcase will open the next day.

Museum Shop

Donate at least 20 items to the museum, with at least one from each category (bugs, fish/deep sea fish, fossils, works of art). Then talk to Blathers each day. One day, he will be thinking about something. Talk to him and he will talk about the museum shop. After that, the museum shop will be added to the list of things you can build in your town. Just sit in your mayor chair and ask to build something, then choose the museum shop.

QR Codes

In the Able Sisters' shop, you can unlock a QR code machine that creates a QR code that represents a custom design. Other players can then scan this code to get your custom designs into their games. To unlock this, talk to Sable, who is working at the sewing machine. You have to talk to her each day for several days in a row. Then the QR code machine will be unlocked.

Club LOL

For Club LOL to open, your shop has to be upgraded to the convenience store, and you have to have reached 100% approval rating according to Isabelle (see the starting the game guide for information about increasing your approval rating). Then the next day that you play, Dr. Shrunk will be outside of your house and will ask you to get signatures for his petition. Agree to do so, then talk to six of your villagers and ask them to sign the petition. Once you have six signatures, go talk to Dr. Shrunk in Main Street to give him the petition. The next day, Club LOL will open.

Kicks

Spend at least 8000 bells in the Able Sisters' shop to unlock the shoe store, Kicks. It must be at least ten days since the town was created.

Shampoodle

Spend at least 10,000 bells in Able Sisters' or Kicks. It must be at least 10 days since Kicks was built.

Fortune Teller Shop

Katrina is the fortune-telling cat who sometimes shows up in your town square. After you and any other players in your town get a fortune a total of 20 times, the mayor of the town has to talk to her. When this happens, the fortune teller shop will be added to the list of things you can build in your town. Just sit in your mayor chair and ask to build something, then choose the fortune teller shop. Lloid, the fundraising gyroid, will be in the train station.

Dream Suite

The Dream Suite is a place where you can visit dream versions of towns, where you can do whatever you want without affecting the real town. After you been mayor for seven days, go to the town hall. If Isabelle is sleeping, talk to her. This unlocks the Dream Suite in the list of public works that you can build.

The Roost Café

Donate at least 50 items to the museum, and open the museum shop (see above). After the museum shop has been open seven days, talk to Blathers. He will eventually be thinking about something when you go into the museum. Talk to him at that time to add the Roost Café to the list of community projects.

Train Station

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you can visit other players towns locally or over the Internet. You can do this by visiting the train station in your town. This page explains how to use the train station to visit towns and invite other players to your town.

Train Station Color

The train station can have blue, green, red, or brown coloring. This is decided randomly when you create your save file.

Adding Internet Friends

To allow other players to visit your town over the Internet, and to visit other players' towns over the Internet, you have to exchange 3DS Friend Codes.
To do so, go to the Home Screen of your 3DS, tap the smiling face icon near the top of touch screen, then tap Register Friend in the top right.
If you are in the same room with the person you want to exchange friend codes with, choose Local.
If you want to add a friend over the Internet, choose internet, then enter the other player's Friend Code. The other player must also manually enter your Friend Code on his or her 3DS. Otherwise, he or she will not show up in your friend list.

Opening Your Gate to Invite Others to Your Town

To allow another player to visit your town, you have to go to the Train Station in your village and talk to Porter the monkey. Tell him that you want to invite others to play in your town. He gives you the option to open your town to nearby players or far away players. Nearby players can visit using the 3DS wireless connection, and far away players can visit if you and the other players' 3DSs are connected to the Internet.

Opening the Gate to Nearby Players

If you open your ticket gate to nearby players, Porter will ask if it's okay to turn off your Internet connection and switch to wireless. Then he will open the train station gate. Anyone playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf nearby can visit your town even if you haven't exchanged friend codes. To send everyone home, talk to Porter.

Opening the Gate to Far Away Players

Talk to Porter and tell him that you want to open the ticket gate for far away players. Only people who have exchanged friend codes with you will be able to visit your town if you open the gate to faraway players. To send everyone home, talk to Porter.

Visiting Other Players' Towns

To visit another player's town, that player has to open his or her gate as described in the previous section.

Visiting a Nearby Town

If you are visiting a nearby town, Porter will search for players nearby who have their gates open to nearby players. He will list any that he finds, and you can tell him to check for more if he mentions a different town from the one that you want to go to. You can visit a nearby town even if you haven't exchanged friend codes with that player.

Visiting a Far away Town

To visit a far away town, your 3DS has to be connected to the Internet. Also, a player with whom you have exchanged friend codes must have his or her gate open to far away players. When you tell Porter that you want to visit a far away town, he will list all of the towns of your friends that are open, if any. Choose one from the list to visit it.

Going Back Home

To go back to your town, just talk to Porter and say that you are going back home. You will ride the train back to your town.

Animal Crossing Friends List

Animal Crossing has its own friend list in the game. The friend list can be accessed by tapping the orange button near the top right of the touch screen.

Adding Friends in the Game

To add friends to your Animal Crossing friends list, you have to visit someone else's town or have another player visit your town. Whenever your gate is open or you are visiting another player's town, there will be a green button in the bottom left of the touch screen that has icons of people on it. Tap that button to show a list of everyone in the current town. In that list, tap the name of the person to add that person to your Animal Crossing friend list.

Best Friends

After you add someone to your friend list, that person can choose to add you as a best friend. When you are on each other's friend lists, that person can tap the heart next to your name to add you as a best friend.

Best Friend Chat

If you and a Best Friend are playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf at the same time, and both of your 3DSes are connected to the Internet, you and your Best Friend can send chat messages even if you are not in the same town. Just tap the orange button in the top right of the touch screen, then tap the name of the player you want to chat with. Type in a chat message and click send, and your friend will see the message.

Re-Tail

Re-Tail, known as R. Parker's in the Japanese version, is a retail store run by Reese, a pink Alpaca, and her husband Cyrus, a blue alpaca. You can sell things there, and you can buy things that your villagers have put on sale. You can also have furniture customized, and you can check the stalk market prices there.

Selling Items to Reese

Reese, the pink alpaca, offers the best selling prices in the game. You should always take your items to Reese to sell.

High-Price Item

Be sure to check the sign next to the front door of Re-Tail. Each day, it displays an item that Reese will pay double for. Sometimes the listed item is specific item (for example: sharks), or a certain type of item (for example: hats).

Putting Items on Display

Rather than sell items directly to Reese, you have the option to put an item on display for sale. You can set your own price. Then, if a villager comes into Re-Tail while you are there, the villager might notice one of the items on display and walk up to it. When this happens, you can talk to the villager, to convince him or her to buy the item.

Refurbishing Items

Cyrus, the blue alpaca, wakes up after you have played for seven days, sold 100,000 bells worth of items to Reese, and have 100 pieces of furniture and 50 clothing items in your catalog. (Items are added to your catalog as soon as you put them into your inventory, even if the Nooklings' shop doesn't have a catalog machine yet.)
After Cyrus wakes up, you can have him customize furniture for you. Check out the list of customizable furniture to find out which furniture you can customize.

Checking the Stalk Market

On Sunday mornings, a brown boar named Joan will sell turnips in your town. During the week, Reese offers changing prices for your turnips. You can talk to Reese to find out her current selling price for turnips. If you check the prices each day, you might be able to predict when the prices will spike and you can make a big profit. Find out more in the stalk market guide.

Club LOL

Club LOL is where K.K. Slider performs, and where Dr. Shrunk can teach you emotional reactions. This page explains how to unlock it, and what you can do there.

Unlock Club LOL

When you first start the game, Club LOL is not there. To unlock it, you have to first upgrade your Nooklings' store to the convenience store. Then you have to sit in your mayor chair in the town hall and make your town earn 100 points. (Just do the things around town that Isabelle asks, then go back to your mayor chair.) Finally, pay Isabelle to be able to build public works and change the town rules. The next time you play, Dr. Shrunk will be outside your house and will ask you to get the villagers to sign his petition. Talk to villagers and ask them to sign. Once you have enough signatures, go to the north part of town and talk to Dr. Shrunk there. The next day, Club LOL will open.

Gyroids on the Stage

There are four gyroids on the stage in Club LOL. Before 8PM, you can walk onto the stage and check on the gyroids. If you have a gyroid in your inventory, you can swap it with a gyroid on the stage. This way, you can put a custom set of gyroids on the stage. The gyroids will 'perform' during DJ K.K.'s club nights, which are explained in the next section.

DJ K.K. Club Nights

Starting at 8PM on every day except Saturday, DJ K.K. will do a DJ set at Club LOL. He will play his songs (see the list of K.K. Slider Songs), showing their album covers on the screen, and he will also include your town tune, and will sometimes take a break and activate the gyroids on the stage before he plays the next song. As explained above, you can put a custom set of gyroids on the stage whenever K.K. is not performing.

Dancing in the Club

You can press buttons on the directional pad to dance while DJ K.K. is DJing. Press up to pump your fist in the air, press down to jump. Press left and right to do dance moves.

K.K. Slider's Saturday Night Performances

Starting at 8PM on Saturday nights, K.K. Slider will perform in Club LOL. You can talk to him and request that he perform a specific song (see the list of K.K. Slider Songs), or you can ask him to perform a song with a particular mood (such as an upbeat song, blue song, etc.) After he finishes the song, he will give you a copy of the song, which you can put into a music player in your house, such as a stereo or record player. He only gives one song per night, though, so once you get one song, he won't give you copies of any other songs you ask him to perform.

Learn Emotions from Dr. Shrunk

If you visit Club LOL before 8PM, Dr. Shrunk can teach you to express your emotions. Just give him some food (e.g. fruit). He will go on stage and do a stand-up comedy routine to teach you an emotional reaction. You can access these by tapping the purple tab at the bottom of the touch screen. The touch screen will show icons representing all of the emotional reactions that you have learned. You can tap and drag the icons around to put them in whatever order you want.

After Learning All Reactions

The final reaction that you learn is the Dr. Shrunk Dance. After you learn it, Dr. Shrunk will give you a yellow blazer that you can wear.

Dream Suite

At the Dream Suite, you can visit other people's towns without making any permanent changes to them. You can also upload a dream version of your own town for other people to visit. When you do this, you get a Dream Code that you can share with others so they can see what your town is like without either of you needing to open the gate. This page explains how the Dream Suite works.

Unlocking the Dream Suite

After you been mayor for seven days, go to the town hall. If Isabelle is sleeping, talk to her. This unlocks the Dream Suite in the list of public works that you can build.

Uploading your Dream Town

There is a couch near the back wall of the Dream Suite. Lie down in this couch to upload your dream town for the first time. Luna will ask if you want to share your custom designs or not. After your town is uploaded, your ID card will show your Dream Code. Other players can visit their own Dream Suite and enter your Dream Code to visit your Dream Town.

Updating your Dream Town Data

You can lie down on the couch to update your Dream Town data. When you do, you can change whether you share your custom designs or not. After you update your data, you receive a payment of 5000 bells. You can do this once a day. The payment goes to the first player in your town who updates the Dream Town data for the day.

Visiting Other Dream Towns

If you lie down on the bed in the Dream Suite, you can visit other Dream Towns. You can visit a random town, visit a town by entering a specific Dream Code, or search for a town based on player name, town name, or geographic region.

While Visiting Other Dream Towns

When visiting a Dream Town, you won't affect the actual player's town, so you can do whatever you want in the town (trample flowers, cut down trees, take money, etc.) and it won't cause any problems for the player.
If the Dream Town's player has decided to share his or her custom designs, you will find Wendel the Walrus walking around the town. Talk to him to receive one of the player's custom designs. You will have to overwrite one of your own designs to receive one from Wendel.
You can't take any items back with you from the Dream Town except for custom designs.
While in the Dream Town, you can go into player houses and villager houses, as well as the train station. However, the train tracks are always blocked, so you can never go north and visit the Main Street shops (Able Sisters, Nooklings', etc.) while you are in a Dream Town. In addition, you can't enter a Dream Town's Re-Tail store, Town Hall, or Roost Café.
If you are in a Dream Town and don't know the Dream Code for the town, just read the bulletin board next to the train station to see the town's Dream Code. Write it down somewhere and you can visit it again later. The official Nintendo Dream Town Code is 0000-0100-0017.

The Roost Café

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the café, known as The Roost, is a public works project. There, you can drink coffee, encounter villagers and special characters, and even get a part time job.

Building the Roost

The Roost is a public works project, but it isn't available in your list of public works projects right away. After you have built the museum gift shop and have donated at least 50 items to the museum, one day Blathers will ask that you build the café. After that, The Roost becomes available as an option in the public works list. Just sit in your mayor chair and choose it from the list of public works projects, then go outside with Isabelle to choose where to build it.

Drinking Coffee

You can drink coffee at The Roost. Just sit in the stool in front of Brewster and order your coffee. You can only drink coffee once per day. At first he will serve plain coffee, but the more times you order coffee, the more options Brewster will give you, such as adding milk and sugar or choosing the coffee beans.

The part time job is a mini-game where you must serve coffee to villagers and special characters. Typically, three villagers (not always from your town) will ask for coffee, Each animal has a preferred combination of coffee beans, milk, and sugar. If you make the customers happy, Brewster will reward you with coffee beans to take home, as well as rare furniture items. How to Unlock Shampoodle's

To unlock Shampoodle's, you first have to unlock Kicks. To do that, you have to spend at least 8000 bells in the Able Sisters' shop. Kicks will open if it has been at least ten days since your town was created. Then, spend 10,000 bells in Able Sisters' or Kicks. After Kicks has been open for at least ten days, Shampoodle's will unlock and open on the second story of the Able Sisters' building.

How to Change your Hairstyle

Talk to Harriet and pay to have her change your hairstyle. Sit in the styling chair and Harriet will ask you a series of questions. Your answers determine the hairstyle that she gives you. The following chart displays the hairstyles you can get for your character based on your answers to Harriet's questions. Note: You can only get your hairstyle changed once per day.

Photo Booth

There is a photo booth next to your museum on Main Street. You can use it to set a picture for your ID Card. You can even use emotions that Dr. Shrunk has taught you. This page explains how to use it. The Photo Booth is open 24 hours a day, but is closed if your gate is open.

Using the Photo Booth

Check on the photo booth next to your museum to go inside. You have to pay 500 bells to go in. After that, there will be a countdown, during which you can tap on any emotions that Dr. Shrunk has taught you. When the countdown reaches the end, the photo booth will take a photo and show you what it looks like. If you're happy with it, say OK, and it will replace your ID Card picture. If you want to try again, choose Try Again, and the countdown will take place again. You can try as many times as you want.

Showing Emotions

If you want to show an emotion in the photo, just tap an emotion. You can learn emotions from Dr. Shrunk in Club LOL. You can tap the emotion at any time during the countdown, so be sure to time it carefully to get the picture to show the emotion at the right moment. You can try again as many times as you want.

On a random day from Monday through Saturday, up to once a week, a random non-resident villager might set up camp at your campsite. This is a villager who does not currently live in your town. You can play mini-games with the camper. The camper might even decide to become a permanent resident of your town.

Campers who Want to Move In

Sometimes when you talk to a camper, he or she will express a desire to move into your town. You can tell the camper if you want him or her to move into your town or not. If you tell the camper that you want him or her to move in, the camper will move into your town within the next few days.

Camper Games

If you talk to a camper a couple of times, he or she might want to play a minigame with you. The following sections list the games and how to play.

Choice Game

The camper will have five secret items. The camper will mention each item one at a time. Each time the camper mentions an item, you have the choice to buy that item and end the game. If you don't buy any of the first four items, you have to buy the last one.

Cheap Item Game

If you don't get enough correct guesses, you have to buy the item at a high price. The guessing games are random, with no way to tell which is the correct choice.

Sell Price Game

The camper will want to buy something that you are carrying. If you agree, the camper will play a random guessing game with you.
