Buying Art

One day a week in your town, Crazy Redd will have a tent in the town square, near your town tree. He sells four works of art. Examine the item that you want to buy. He won't give it to you right away. Instead, he mails it to you the next day. Choose carefully! Once you buy, you can't change your mind and switch to a different item!

Telling the Real from the Fake

Crazy Redd sometimes sells fake artworks that are cheap imitations of the real thing. Blathers won't accept fakes for the museum, so you should do your best to avoid being fooled. How do you tell the difference? Each art work is based on a real work of art from the real world. Redd's fakes always have a visible difference from the real thing. Below is a list of the differences that will tell you if you're buying genuine or fake art, along with a picture of the real work of art for you to compare.

Gracie's Fashion Check

Gracie is a fashionista giraffe who might show up on a random weekday in your town square. She will take a look at your outfit and tell you if you're stylish or not. If you pass her test four times, your Home Center can be upgraded to the department store.

Clothing Themes

Every piece of clothing, including shirts, pants, socks, shoes, hats, and accessories, has a theme. There are ten possible themes:
  1. Sporty
  2. Cute (ファンシー)
  3. Iconic (トラディショナル)
  4. Rock 'n' Roll
  5. Official (フォマル)
  6. Ornate (ゴージャス)
  7. Flashy (クレイジー)
  8. Modern
  9. Historical (オールド)
  10. Basic (ブナン)
For lists of clothing by theme, please scroll down to the clothing by theme section on this page.

Passing the Fashion Check

When you speak to Gracie, talk to her until she mentions a fashion theme. To pass the fashion check, most of the items in your outfit have to match the theme that she is asking for. In addition, your outfit can't include a clashing combination. The following table shows which combinations will result in failing the fashion check. The cells marked FAIL represent the combinations that will fail the check. For example, the intersection of Sporty and Official (フォマル) is marked FAIL. Therefore, wearing an outfit that combines Sporty and Official (フォマル) items will fail the fashion check. Note: Even if your socks are covered up, Gracie will still include your socks in the fashion check.

Gulliver

Gulliver can wash up on your beach at 6am once a week on Monday through Saturday. Once you wake him up, he asks you to help him remember the name of the country that he's thinking of. If you give him the correct answer, you get a souvenir from that country.

Checking if Gulliver is in Town

If you build a police box (see public works projects), Booker or Copper can tell you if Gulliver is in town. He will mention some trouble on the beach. You can also simply walk up and down the beach. Be sure to check any 'unattached' sections of the beach by swimming there with a diving suit, because Gulliver can appear there, too.

Waking Gulliver Up

Once you find Gulliver on your beach, you have to wake him up. To do this, you have to talk to him repeatedly until he wakes up. It can take many tries. Eventually, he will open his eyes, stand up, and ask for help.

How to Help Gulliver

Gulliver wants to remember the name of a country, but he needs your help. He will describe the country, and there will be some key words in his description that tell you which country he's talking about. Be sure to pay attention to what he says!
After Gulliver describes the country, you have to choose the correct country name from a list of four. If you choose the correct answer, Gulliver will thank you. The next day, you will receive a letter in the mail from him that contains a souvenir from that country. If you give him the wrong answer, he will send you a chocolate coin instead, which you can eat or sell.

Pascal

Pascal is a philosopher otter. If you get a diving suit and catch a scallop, Pascal will appear and ask if you will give him the scallop. In exchange, he gives you a piece of Pirate furniture.

Get a Diving Suit

You can purchase a diving suit on the island. Just go on island tours to win medals, then use the medals to purchase a diving suit from Grams's gift shop. Her selection changes every day, so check back often until she sells a diving suit.

Catch a Scallop

Scallops are deep sea creatures that can be caught year round. They have medium shadows that move in an erratic, jumpy pattern. They are very rare from February through April, and very rare in October. They are somewhat rare from May through September. They are somewhat common from November through January. On the island, they are somewhat rare from 9AM through 4PM, and very rare the rest of the time.

Give the Scallop to Pascal

When you catch a scallop for the first time of the day, Pascal will appear nearby and ask if you will give it to him. Say yes. He will give you a piece of Pirate furniture and swim away, eating the scallop.

Katrina

Katrina is a fortune teller cat who may appear in a tent in your plaza during the week. She can give you a reading and tell you how your luck will be today. She can also recommend a lucky item to wear that will boost your luck during the day. If you get enough readings for her, you can build a fortune teller shop in Main Street for her to move into permanently.

When Does Katrina Appear?

Katrina is a Special Visitor who can appear in a tent in your town plaza up to once a week, Monday through Saturday. She is not guaranteed to show up every week. If she is in town, her tent will be open from 9AM to 7PM.

Katrina's Good Luck Item

You can get a reading from Katrina for 500 bells. She will tell you about your luck for the day. She will recommend a specific type of item to wear for good luck. If you wear that item, your luck will be increased until 11PM.

The Fortune Teller Shop

To find out how to unlock the Fortune Teller Shop, check the Shop Unlock Guide. In the Fortune Teller Shop, Katrina will give you a reading for 500 bells as usual.
After you build the Fortune Teller Shop, Katrina might offer a rare item for 10,000 bells if your item luck for the day is good.

Katie, the Traveling Kitten

Katie the kitten has appeared in previous Animal Crossing titles. In previous games, she would randomly appear in your town, crying because she got separated from her mother and needs to be escorted to where her mom is. In New Leaf, Katie is more confident and goes traveling on her own. She'll ask you to escort her to a new town.

How to Get Katie

Katie appears in your town if she was escorted by one of your friends to your town three days ago. She will be in your town between 6AM and 6AM the next day, or until you take her to another town. It is also possible that Katie may appear in your town randomly if you have ever connected to the Internet in your New Leaf town.

What to do with Katie

When Katie is in your town, talk to her and she will ask you to take her to another town. Any town will do. Ask one of your real-world friends to open his or her gate so you can travel to that town. Katie will follow you. When you get on the train, Katie will either come with you, or she will drop her ticket and get off the train, but the doors will close behind her and you'll go to your friend's town by yourself. When you go back to your own town, Katie will not be there.

After Taking Katie to Another Town

After you have gotten on the train with (or without) Katie and she isn't in your town anymore, you will get a letter from her the next day. If she dropped her ticket, her letter will explain that she got on the next train. Attached to her letter will be an exclusive item that you can only get from Katie.
